"Things are getting slim in New York" said Tenaglia before launching into his explosive Saturday night set. If this was a statement about the current state of the club scene in Manhattan, I wondered what he meant. Pacha was packed to the ceiling with clubbers and showing no sign of "slimming".
Michael Jackson was the theme of the night as the posters of a young Tenaglia with the King of Pop revealed. An attention grabbing and theatrical opening to Tenaglia's set got the excitement levels high. The sounds of a digital thunderstorm echoed around the club as Tengalia, perched in a higher than usual DJ booth (presumibly to allow the stage to be used for dancers), kicked off the night with Jackson's "I'll Be There". Similar retrospective Jackson classics followed until it was time to get down to what Tengalia does best. "And it goes a little something like this!" he yelled as hard-stomping house beats sent the dancefloor crazy. As the night heated up, Michael Jackson songs of yesteryear were seamlessly incorporated into an otherwise minimalist house set. Memerable moments include using Jackson's Remember The Times with powerful effect - as both the original and the remix versions were spun back to back. And later, a stellar remix of Thriller turned the youthful crowd bananas. Michael Jackson impersonators are probably in big demand nowadays and there were a few on display here, dancing with white gloves and performing humorous acts for the crowd. My favourite moment was the Jackson impersonator that dangled a fake baby from the balcony. The comedic value wasn't lost on the crowd. Overall, a great night from one legend saluting another.
