Retro/Grade - Zoid

British musicians Tom Neville and Serge Santiago, otherwise known as Retro/Grade, take their backward-looking approach from a period between disco and house - "the grey zone where synths were first used with disco and when drum machines were used to keep a track in time". Zoid takes a suitably evocative musical phrase and develops it skillfully. Minor in tone, the music here is centered on a descending chord pattern. Key changes are also thrown into the mix to keep things fresh. There's something musically alluring about Retro/Grade's productions, they take you to another time and place, in an absorbing and provocative manner. Also check out Moda.
