Retro/Grade - Moda

Out of London, Serge Santiago and Tom Neville are behind Retro/Grade, their inspiration taken from a period between disco and house - "the grey zone where synths were first used with disco and when drum machines were used to keep a track in time". It's an interesting concept and Moda is an interesting track. Centered upon an immediately recognizable synth motif, the track plays out as an exciting experiment in minimalist arrangement and retro instrumentation. There are some great musical moments -- I like the bassline that's brought in early on (0:57) - it changes the harmonics and creates a compelling key change - especially at club volume. Overall, cleverly composed and provocatively produced. DO check this out.
