BEST OF 2009: Florence and The Machine - Rabbit Heart (Leo Zero Remix)
It's been a huge year for dance music. Over the next ten days we're going to look back at the largest tracks of 2009, as featured on Large Weekend.
Every once in a while, a track comes along that just blows you away. This is one of those rare incidents - and a pure pleasure to review. The original, entitled "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)", is a powerful and beautifully composed song. But the real magic was created in this stunning Leo Zero remix. Creating a hook of this quality is a huge skill in itself. Leo Zero enhances a chord structure that's loosely lifted from the original, gives it the full "live" piano treatment, and builds upon it with twinkly counter-melodies and retro percussion. The vocals are simply heavenly with this backing. All the great songs of our times have a "never ending" quality; a chorus that you want to go on looping forever. That's definitely the case here, but repetitive it is not. Continuous variation in the piano accompaniment and layers of vocals build upon the excitement as the track progresses from good to great. Rabbit Heart is pure brilliance, remixed with soul and filled with the rare qualities of an instant classic.
