Julie Thompson – It Only Hurts (Richard Durand Remix)

Based in Hessen, Germany, singer Julie Thompson's production It Only Hurts is a melancholic and thought provoking house track brought to the world by Black Hole Recordings. This remix, however, from Dutch trance DJ of the moment Richard Durand is very special indeed. Things start off seriously enough, as driving tech-house percussion is coupled with some menacing bass notes. But the gears are shifted pretty early on (1:28) as beautiful symphonic strings are introduced, echoing the melody from the original but developed further. This leads to the first instance of Thompson's vocals which work perfectly. Next Durand takes us back to the more serious sensibility of the intro as he builds intensity with crisply produced percussion. The real mastery of this remix is Durand's ability to dance seamlessly between the somber and the sublime. The latter sections have cinematic beauty while the former pack a well crafted punch. An absolutely first rate production.
